Worth knowing

  • Lake Nakuru, which contains soda and has no outlet, is located in the national park.
Gazelles and waterbucks graze between mighty fever acacias.
A successful rhino conservation project was launched here in 1988, so that over 100 of these gray colossi now feel safe here.
The lake is home to around 450 bird species, mainly flamingos and pelicans.
The surrounding Nakuru National Park has a rich animal world with rhinos, giraffes and antelopes.
Around 550 plant species grow around the lake.
  • The lake's abundance of algae used to attract a large number of flamingos that lined the shore.
But other birds, warthogs, baboons and other large mammals also feel at home in the area.
  • The lake's water level dropped drastically in the early 1990s, but has largely recovered since then.
In 2013, there was an alarming rise in the lake's water level, which led to flamingos migrating to Lake Bogoria in search of food.
