TSAVO EAST
With a total area of 21,000 km2, the TSAVO is the largest national park in Kenya. Founded shortly after the 2nd World War, it is divided into East and West by the rail and road link between Mombasa and Nairobi. The altitude varies from 230 m to 2179 m, with the eastern part being flatter than the western part. The Chyulu Mountains in the north-west of Tsavo West were only added to the national park in 1983.
Worth knowing
- Tsavo East landscape: divided into three sections by the Tiva and Galana rivers, whereby the area north of the Tiva is considered a retreat for animals and is not developed.
Characteristic of Tsavo East is the endless, dry expanse covered by thorn bush and the dark red, iron-rich soil. - Tsavo East NP is the closest national park to the coast.
- Wildlife: the park is the largest protected area in Kenya and is home to most of the larger mammals, huge herds of dusty red elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, small kudus, gerenuk and hirola.
- Worth seeing: with the 300 km long Yatta Plateau, the longest lava flow in the world, Tsavo East offers a unique adventure.
